Senior Cat Notes

A home that asks less of an older cat

The aim is access, choice and stable footing. Cornell recommends low-sided litter boxes, reachable resources and ramps or steps to favorite places. Start with the routes your cat actually uses, rather than rearranging everything at once.

Trace the daily route

Walk from the usual bed to food, water and litter. Remove slippery obstacles and make essentials reachable without stairs where possible. Keep food and water easy to reach and check that another pet is not blocking access. Keep litter separate from feeding areas.

Offer a lower route

A secure, nonslip step or ramp may let a cat keep a favorite resting place without a high jump. Check stability before use. Offer a warm, draft-free resting area, but avoid heat that could burn a cat who cannot move away quickly. Familiar bedding can help preserve a routine.

Help without taking over

Gentle grooming may help when reaching the coat becomes difficult. Stop if handling seems painful and ask your vet about mats or nail care. Nightlights and a consistent layout may help a cat with poor vision. Let your cat choose contact and rest rather than forcing activity.
